ART CLUB WEEK COMMENCING 9TH DECEMBER 2024
Festive Fun for this last week of term with the Infant pupils making collage Christmas trees and Junior Art Club drawings inspired whilst listening to Driving Home For Christmas.
ART CLUB WEEK COMMENCING 25TH NOVEMBER 2024
The two art clubs had fun, messy, sticky lessons this week! Both groups looked at contemporary American artist Nancy Standlee, and her amazing collage birds and animals for inspiration and discussed how she uses torn paper to look like the animal's fur or feathers, and colours to create light and shade. They also talked about the seven elements of art - shape, form, line, value, texture, colour and space and looked at simplifying the bird's form to a simple circle.
As Christmas is fast approaching, the Juniors made collage robins and the Infants made collage baubles. The children drew great shapes and then added the brightly coloured feathers and paper and the background using a variety of recycled papers, tearing strips to create feathers and other details.
Collage is always fun and rewarding, if a little sticky!

ART CLUB WEEK COMMENCING 18TH NOVEMBER 2024
The Infant School Art Club had an action-packed lesson this week, creating great cargo trains! The pupils started with half a piece of blue A3 paper and drew the wiggly line for the train track using black oil pastels. Grass was added next with different tones of green oil pastel. The children chose rectangle shapes from colourful recycled painted paper for the train and added extra paper details. These were then stuck on and connected. Next, the carriages were filled with various textures - wool, silver paper and brown paper for the cargo! Finally, wheels were printed using old lids and smoke from the train was sponged on. It was a great, fun lesson.
This week the Junior School Art Club looked at the wonderful Hunterdvasser and his fantastic colourful creations. He is one of the most important and influential artists and architects of the 20th Century. Born in Austria in 1928, he lived through the Second World War and was very affected by the destruction and horror he saw around him, but inspired by the new life he saw emerging from the earth. He wanted to live in harmony with nature and thought that a happy place to live would be a colourful place! His work often includes bright colours and natural, organic forms. He didn’t like straight lines, and used lots of spirals as he believed these were the symbol of life. The pupils looked at his quirky curvy buildings and stripey-patterned-filled landscape.
The children worked out their compositions and then drew their design on A3 watercolour paper, using coloured oil pastels. They made sure to fill in all gaps with lines and shapes, working out what would be in the foreground and what would be behind. They then used lovely bright watercolours to paint their pictures, with hot and cold areas, creating the great result below!
BREAKDANCE FLASH MOB
On Friday 15th November, the Junior School Breakdance Club put on a surprise flash mob for the rest of the school in the playground.
ART CLUB WEEK COMMENCING 11TH NOVEMBER 2024
The beautiful Azaleas growing by the village shop were Mrs Hall's inspiration for this week's art lessons, and she couldn't resist buying a bunch.
Both schools had great lessons, drawing and painting vases of flowers. The children looked at various still lives of flowers by different artists to show different styles and ways of drawing flowers. Some were very detailed from the 16th Century and others with very little detail from the 20th Century. The Juniors discussed the composition of the vase of flowers and how to look at the dimensions – the vase was as tall as the flowers – and also how the leaves and petals overlapped. Mrs Hall demonstrated drawing a vase with a rounded bottom and then plotting out the flower centres first, then adding petals, followed by the stems and leaves.
There were some really fantastic drawings, filling the page with flowers. They then painted using bright colours. Adding light and shade to make the vase appear 3D was discussed and creating a pale colour for the background using a lot of white.

ART CLUB WEEK COMMENCING 4TH NOVEMBER 2024
The Infant School Art Club started with a simple drawing of a dog's face! They folded the paper in half and then the children followed instructions to draw half of the dog's face in black oil pastel on one side of the paper. Then they folded the paper back together and rubbed the drawing onto the other side of the paper with their palms! The children opened their paper to reveal faint lines which they traced over to finish their drawings. They then added eyes, noses, spots and dashes, eyebrows and eyelashes as well as hats. The hats were then painted with watercolour and the children all cut out their own dogs. Brilliant!
The Junior School Art club started with some fun facts about Picasso, artists that influenced him – Marc Chagall and Cezanne, talked about art movements and Cubism and then looked at examples of his portraits. Pupils were shown how to draw a portrait combining a profile and a full face, and then they tackled their own Picasso-style portraits! They drew with pencil, then painted using bright colours and outlined everything in black with some crazy colourful results!
The children were not fazed at all about drawing a Picasso-style portrait and their enthusiasm and ability was most impressive.
