Implementation

Our pedological approach to teaching this subject in the Robert Piggott CE Schools:

We believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being.  Our broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their physical ability. This is evident in our attainment of a SCHOOL GAMES Silver Award.

Progressive learning objectives, combined with varied teaching approaches and a broad range of exposure, endeavour to provide stimulating, enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences for all our pupils.  Through the selection of suitably differentiated and logically developed tasks, it is intended that our children, irrespective of their innate ability, will enjoy success and be motivated to further develop their individual sporting potential.

In Key Stage One pupils will be given a broad range of opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills in PE. These opportunities will help them to gain competence and confidence in agility, coordination and balance. Alongside this, the children will explore how the body works, develop the ability to reflect on themselves and others, and finally, be able to follow rules.

Pupils will be taught to:

  • Participate in team games, pass and receive balls and gain an understanding of basic tactics
  • Participate in basic movement sequences and patterns
  • Explore movement and skills such as throwing, catching, running, jumping and dance
  • Participate in a variety of activities which helps to build co-ordination, balance and agility
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges [forest schools] both individually and within a team

In Key Stage Two we continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and linking them to make actions and sequences of movement.  Children should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing. We also participate in inter-school competitions across a variety of sports throughout the academic year to develop the skill of showing grace in both victory and defeat as well as showing courage and determination to continue. The children should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:

  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate
  • apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges [forest schools] both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

Impact:

Our progressive PE curriculum should allow all children to develop a range of fundamental skills and the opportunity to apply them to a variety of sports and activities.

Children should be able to discuss the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this is achieved, as well as develop skills that underpin life such as teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, self-motivation and independence.

We aspire for children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity that becomes part of their life outside of school. Children can represent the school at sporting events from local to county level and alongside this we share sporting achievements both in and out of school in celebration assembly, so that we are promoting sports and activities as well as celebrating all levels of success.
